Chapter 8 - A Dead Man's Signature“It's impossible,” I told Lucía.

“That's why we don't ignore it.”
She studied the document, then asked for Dad's death certificate and authentic specimens of his handwriting. We discussed reporting the suspected forgery and ensuring the loan investigators knew the claimed assignment was contested. Lucía warned me not to post the document online. An accusation that felt satisfying for ten minutes could complicate matters for months.
I agreed. What I wanted was for someone to stop reaching through my life and taking things.
Sergio called that afternoon. His voice was smooth enough to sell a bridge to someone standing on one.
“Clara, I'm sure Javier didn't explain the financing structure.”
“He explained he expected me to pay his debts.”
“Let's not use emotional language. There's a perfectly legal route forward.”
“Then send it to my attorney.”
“There are people whose money is already committed. They won't appreciate delays.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It's a warning about consequences.”
I ended the call and saved the details. Five minutes later, I got a message from an unknown number: Your father trusted the wrong family. Don't make his mistake.
I stood very still, listening to the office printer run. The message was designed to scare me, and it worked. I sent a screenshot to Lucía and added it to my written timeline.
Inés brought me coffee. “You don't have to be fearless to keep going.”
“I'd settle for one ordinary Tuesday.”
She smiled without humor. “Put it on next quarter's calendar.”
Then Paula called from a phone I didn't recognize. Her brother Tomás had been visited by two men asking why she'd spoken to me. She had already contacted a lawyer and wanted to give a full account of the private-room meeting.
“There's a recording,” she said.
“What recording?”
“Mercedes told me to take minutes on my phone so Javier couldn't deny what he promised. I started the recorder before I walked in.”
“Do you still have it?”
“Most of it.”
“Most?”
“The ending got cut off. But I heard what Mercedes said about your father.”
Paula lowered her voice.
“She said your dad found out where their first investment money came from. And that's why Javier was never supposed to marry you.”
