Chapter 11 - Four Loans

The four loans totaled $612,000.

Oscar felt the number in his chest before he understood it.

Not because he believed he owed it.

Because somebody had built an entire financial life in his name while he was counting quarters at the grocery store.

Reese showed them the dates.

Loan one: $150,000.

Loan two: $87,000.

Loan three: $125,000.

Loan four: $250,000.

Each application described Oscar as a retired executive with substantial family support and investment income.

Oscar almost laughed.

“Retired executive.”

Jared said, “You were a corporate auditor.”

“Apparently fraud gave me a promotion.”

No one smiled.

The fourth loan was the dangerous one. It contained guarantees tied to Jared and Lauren’s home, plus a security interest in an investment account Jared did not recognize.

“What account is that?”

Reese pointed to the number.

Lauren closed her eyes.

Jared turned slowly. “What account?”

“My inheritance account.”

“You told me your inheritance was gone.”

“It mostly is.”

“How much is left?”

“About ninety thousand.”

Reese shook his head. “According to the loan package, it held six hundred and eighty thousand when the guarantee was signed.”

Jared stared at her.

Lauren began to cry for real now.

“My mother’s house was going to be auctioned.”

“So you risked ours.”

“I thought Chase would repay the development money.”

Oscar asked, “Did he?”

Lauren’s silence answered.

Reese explained that his firm had already noticed irregularities. Martin had called that morning claiming a “family dispute” might interfere with payment. Reese had decided to verify the borrower personally.

“You came because Martin got nervous,” Oscar said.

“Yes.”

“Good. Nervous people make mistakes.”

Oscar requested copies of everything.

Reese agreed.

As he left, he paused near the door.

“There’s one more thing. We have video from the signing of the fourth loan. Our policy requires recorded verification for large guarantees.”

Lauren’s face went white.

Jared said, “Show us.”

Reese hesitated. “You’re not going to like it.”

“Show us.”

Reese opened his tablet.

The video began.

A woman sat beside Martin Vale at a conference table.

She wore a gray wig, large glasses, and Oscar’s old beige cardigan.

Then she looked into the camera and said, “My name is Oscar Blake.”
