Chapter 16 - The Bigger Scheme

The police traced Evelyn’s last known phone signal to a hotel near O’Hare.

By the time officers arrived, the room was empty.

No signs of violence. No blood. No struggle.

Just a half-drunk cup of coffee and a receipt from a gas station in Rosemont.

Oscar focused on the part they could control.

He returned to his apartment with Jared and spent most of the night analyzing the account records from Unit 318.

At 1:26 a.m., he found the pattern.

North Harbor had received money from more than Jared.

There were deposits marked FAMILY CARE, ELDER SUPPORT, TRUST ADMIN, MEDICAL MANAGEMENT.

Different names.

Same amounts repeated in regular cycles.

Oscar counted at least fourteen families.

“They were using older relatives as cover,” he said.

Jared leaned over his shoulder. “For what?”

“To explain money moving out of household accounts. Adult children think they’re paying for care. The care company redirects the funds, creates fake paperwork, then borrows against identities with weak monitoring.”

Jared stared at him. “How long has this been going on?”

“Years.”

Lauren sat across the table, hollow-eyed.

“I introduced Martin to two friends.”

Oscar looked up.

“What?”

“They had parents who needed help managing bills. I told them he was reliable.”

Jared closed his eyes.

Lauren began to shake. “Oh God.”

Oscar pushed the recorder toward her.

“Names.”

She gave them.

One was a physician in Naperville.

Another was a school administrator in Oak Park.

Jared called his attorney again. By sunrise, the attorney had connected them with federal investigators because the transfers crossed state lines and involved identity fraud.

Oscar hated the phrase “federal investigators.” It made everything sound larger than his kitchen.

But larger was exactly what it had become.

At 7:12 a.m., Jared received an alert.

Someone had attempted to transfer $247,000 from Lauren’s inheritance account.

The request came from an IP address associated with a hotel network.

O’Hare.

Lauren whispered, “Mom.”

Oscar shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to the authorization method.

The transfer used a security token assigned to Martin Vale.

Then Jared’s phone rang from an unknown number.

Martin said, “If you want Evelyn alive and out of prison, bring me the storage records.”
