Chapter 15 - The Setup

Todd denied sending the box.

He was furious enough that I almost believed him.

"Your mother is setting me up," he said over speakerphone in Dana's office. "She knows I'm the easiest person to blame now."

"Why would she do that?"

"Because I told her last night I was done."

Dana leaned toward the phone. "Done with what, exactly?"

Todd exhaled.

Then the rest came out.

For months, Mom had been feeding him selected information about my marriage and telling him the company was at risk. She wanted Todd ready to support an emergency leadership change. In exchange, she'd back him for president.

"Did you know she was harassing Savannah?" I asked.

"No. I knew she hated her. That's different."

"Not different enough."

Todd went quiet.

He admitted he had met Russell Pike twice. He admitted reviewing reports about me. He admitted knowing company money paid for surveillance.

Then he offered us something useful.

"Bernice keeps a second phone."

I looked at Dana.

"What second phone?"

"Small black one. Prepaid. She uses it when she doesn't want messages on her regular account."

That afternoon, police executed a search warrant connected to the recording device and alleged document fraud. They recovered two phones from Mom's house.

One was the phone everyone knew.

The other was small and black.

The detective couldn't tell us what was on it yet.

Mom's attorney issued a statement accusing us of a "family dispute weaponized through law enforcement."

I refused to respond publicly.

Instead, Savannah and I went home and packed a hospital bag.

It was the first normal thing we'd done in days.

Tiny socks.

A soft hat.

The pink blanket I'd dropped on the floor the day everything began.

Savannah held it against her chest.

"You still want to use this one?"

"More than anything."

She smiled for the first time in what felt like weeks.

Then she winced.

"What?"

"Nothing. Just a cramp."

Another one came four minutes later.

Then another.

Savannah was only twenty-nine weeks pregnant.

I called the doctor.

Her voice became urgent.

"Go to labor and delivery now."

As I grabbed the hospital bag, my phone buzzed.

A message from the detective.

We unlocked the second phone. You need to see what was scheduled for tomorrow.
