Chapter 11 - Sewn Into the Gown

“Everybody back up,” Daniel said.

Vanessa lifted the skirt slightly and moved toward a side table.

Margaret followed. “Don’t damage it.”

Vanessa gave her a stunned look. “The dress?”

“The evidence.”

Daniel found a small pair of scissors in the event emergency kit. He handed them to Vanessa.

“You do it.”

Her hands trembled.

The broken feather was not embroidery at all. It was a narrow flap disguised beneath gold thread.

Vanessa slipped the tip of the scissors beneath three tiny stitches.

Snip.

Snip.

The flap opened.

Inside was a thin strip of plastic no longer than her finger.

“A micro SD card,” Daniel said.

Celeste stood so fast her chair nearly fell.

“Oh my God.”

“You knew?” Margaret demanded.

“No. But Emily used those to move design files between machines.”

Daniel’s security chief brought a laptop and adapter.

Vanessa watched him insert the card.

One folder appeared.

EMILY - FINAL.

Inside were scanned sketches, photographs, audio files, and a video dated two days before Emily’s death.

Daniel clicked the video.

Emily appeared on screen.

She looked twenty-four, alive, annoyed, beautiful. Her dark hair was tied back with a pencil. Behind her hung the unfinished crane gown.

Daniel made a sound Vanessa had never heard from him before. It was not quite a sob and not quite a word. He reached toward the screen, then stopped with his hand in the air. For nine years, Emily had existed in framed photographs and careful family stories. Now she was moving, rolling her eyes at a loose strand of hair, tapping a pencil against the worktable as if she might walk into the ballroom at any second.

Margaret lowered herself into a chair. "She wore that sweater the last Christmas we had together."

Celeste looked away. "She hated that sweater."

Margaret stared at her.

Celeste gave a broken little smile. "She told me it made her look like a couch."

For one painful second, Margaret laughed. Then the laugh collapsed into tears. Daniel squeezed his mother's shoulder without taking his eyes off the screen.

Emily looked into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, somebody found the dress before I could finish what I started.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Emily continued.

“The gold cranes are a map. The thread count marks account numbers. The broken feather marks the payment that proves who has been moving money out of the foundation.”

Daniel stared at the embroidery.

Emily leaned closer to the camera.

“And if anything happens to me, do not trust the ledger in my mother’s archive.”

Brooke’s face went white.

Emily took a breath.

“Someone replaced the real one.”

Then she said a name.

May you like

“Richard Whitmore.”

Daniel’s dead father.
