Chapter 12 - The Dead Man's Name

Daniel stopped the video.

“No.”

Margaret whispered, “Play it again.”

He didn’t.

“My father was not stealing from the foundation.”

Celeste’s voice was gentle. “Daniel—”

“He built it.”

Margaret lowered her hand. “He also controlled every account.”

Daniel looked at her. “You knew there were questions?”

“I knew Aaron accused him. I thought Aaron was trying to destroy us.”

Vanessa remembered all the stories Daniel had told her about Richard Whitmore: demanding, brilliant, impossible to please, dead five years now from a heart attack.

“Emily thought your father was moving money,” Vanessa said.

Daniel looked wounded by the sentence itself.

The security chief opened the remaining files.

There were spreadsheets hidden inside image metadata. Payment trails. Shell companies. Transfers.

Then one account name appeared repeatedly.

CALDWELL CONSULTING.

Vanessa’s stomach dropped.

“That was my mother’s company.”

Margaret’s eyes turned cold again.

Daniel zoomed in.

The payments began nine years ago.

The first was $75,000.

Vanessa shook her head. “No. Emily said the ledger was fake.”

“But these files came from Emily,” Margaret replied.

Celeste leaned closer to the screen. “Look at the memo field.”

It did not say For the original.

It said Witness relocation expenses.

Everyone stared.

Daniel whispered, “Relocation?”

Another file appeared. A letter from Emily to Renee.

Renee, if Aaron refuses to leave, make him. Dad knows he copied the accounts. If he stays in Chicago, he is in danger.

Margaret grabbed the edge of the table.

“Aaron didn’t die with Emily,” Celeste said.

Daniel looked at her sharply. “What?”

“No. He disappeared the next morning.”

Vanessa’s phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

This time the message contained a live location pin.

It was outside the ballroom.

Then came five words:

I BROUGHT THE CEDAR BOX.

May you like

Vanessa looked toward the doors.

And someone knocked three times.
