Chapter 10 - What Silence Costs

Dad had recorded the conversation by accident while testing a voice-memo app his doctor wanted him to use for appointment reminders. Or that was his explanation. Whatever the reason, the file was real.

At home, with Maya on the phone, I listened to Mom say, "Claire signed the original papers. Make the new one look close enough. Once Derek takes it, she won't embarrass us by making a fuss."

Rachel answered, "And if she does?"

"Tell her she won't see us again. She always folds."

I stared at the wall long after the clip ended.

"Claire?" Maya said.

"I'm here."

"Please send me the original file with the date information. We'll preserve it and have the circumstances checked. Don't circulate it."

I sent it. Then I sat on the bathroom floor and cried as quietly as possible.

Lily knocked once. "Mommy?"

I wiped my face and opened the door. "Hey, bug."

She held out the bracelet she'd fixed. The letters were still wrong, but she had made it smaller.

"I don't want Grandma to have it," she said.

"That's your decision."

"Do I have to love her?"

The question hurt more than the recording.

"You don't have to make yourself feel anything," I told her. "You can love somebody and still stay away when they're mean. You can be mad. You can change your mind."

"Can I be mad at Grandpa, too?"

"Yes."

"Good," she said firmly, and marched back to her room.

The next day, Maya filed paperwork asking the court to stop further transfers while we challenged the recorded deed. She also put the family on notice to communicate through her. I arranged counseling for Lily and changed the emergency contacts everywhere they needed changing.

By Friday, the pounding behind my eyes had become a permanent roommate. I was standing in the grocery-store line with cereal and oranges when a man in a dark suit approached.

"Claire Morgan?"

"Yes?"

He held out an envelope. "You've been served."

Across the top, in capital letters, were the words COMPLAINT FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT.

The plaintiff was Derek Sloan.
