Chapter 15 - The Favorite Daughter Finally Speaks

No one moved.
Rachel's face drained of color as she heard her own words. The judge told her not to make any further statements without legal advice and directed the attorneys to address what had just happened through proper procedure.
Outside the courtroom, Mom grabbed Rachel by the elbow.
"You fool," she hissed.
I had heard my mother call Rachel lazy, careless, and special. I'd never heard her call Rachel a fool. Apparently confessing a crime was the one mistake Mom couldn't turn into my fault fast enough.
Rachel jerked away. "You told me Claire would fix it! You said she always does!"
Derek stepped toward them. "Both of you need to stop talking."
Mom turned on me instead. "Look at what you've done to this family."
I wanted to throw every mortgage statement at her feet. Instead I said, "I didn't forge a deed. I didn't threaten a child. I didn't take money for a house I couldn't sell."
"We raised you," she said.
"And you still think that means I owe you a lifetime of silence."
She opened her mouth, but I was already walking away.
Maya caught up beside me. "That outburst helps explain the facts, but don't assume this is over. The title still needs to be cleared, the civil case resolved, and any criminal investigation handled separately."
"Can I at least feel happy for ten minutes?"
"You can feel whatever you want for ten minutes."
I laughed. It came out shaky but real.
Dad stood at the courthouse doors. For years I'd wanted him to choose me, just once, without being pushed. In that courtroom he had finally told the truth. It didn't erase the Christmas dinner. It didn't erase decades of keeping his head down. But it was a start.
"Claire," he called. "I'm sorry."
"I know."
"Will you tell Lily—"
"No," I said gently. "You tell her when she's ready to listen. Not before."
He nodded. His mouth twisted as if he was fighting tears.
Then he put one hand against his chest.
May you like
"Dad?"
His knees buckled. He fell against the courthouse railing and collapsed before I could reach him.
