Chapter 5 - Not a Family Meeting

My mother folded her arms. "There you are. I was wondering how long it would take you to come crawling back."
"You used my signature," I said.
"Don't be dramatic. Rachel found a way to get us out from under your control."
"By selling my house to a stranger?"
Derek's smile tightened. "I paid a substantial advance based on those representations. I expect the parties to honor them."
"Then you should have confirmed who owned it."
Rachel stepped down onto the porch. "You think owning the deed means you own us?"
"It means you cannot sign my name."
"You were going to throw Mom and Dad out."
"No. I was going to stop paying for your choices. There's a difference."
Mom's face hardened. "This was our home before you were born."
I nearly said And you made sure I never felt welcome in it. Instead I took pictures of the SUV, license plate, and front door. Maya had told me to document, not fight.
Derek moved closer. "I don't appreciate threats."
"Good," I said. "Then you'll understand why I don't appreciate forgery."
Dad came outside at last, coat unbuttoned. He looked exhausted.
"Claire, please. Not in front of the neighbors."
"You seem more concerned about the neighbors than a crime."
He glanced at Derek. "Everyone needs to leave."
Rachel laughed. "Especially her."
I walked back to my car. No one followed, which somehow made me feel worse. I'd spent my life hoping one of them would.
When I called Maya, she was firm. "Do not change the locks or shut off utilities. They live there, and we need to follow the proper process. Keep the loan current for now, because your name and credit are on it. Your Christmas statement was a boundary, not an instant transfer of debt."
"So they get to keep living there while I pay?"
"For now. But they do not get to keep controlling the outcome."
At home, I found seventeen missed calls from Mom. The final voicemail was thirty-two seconds long.
"Claire, I know things got heated," she began, in the sweet voice she used around strangers. "But if you drag your sister into this, don't be surprised when people start asking questions about how you raise Lily."
May you like
Then she laughed softly.
"We know where she goes to school."
