Chapter 14 - Beneath the TrayWith appropriate court authorization, investigators returned to the estate. The silver tray sat in a glass-fronted cabinet, polished until it reflected every light in the room. Beneath its base was a narrow paper compartment, old enough to have been part of an earlier restoration.

Inside lay a small memory card wrapped in a grocery receipt. On the back, Chloe had written: If they say I agreed, play this.

The card contained video recorded in Evelyn's study. Chloe's image appeared reflected in a dark window. Across the room, Garrett stood beside his mother and Judge Pike. Their voices carried clearly enough for investigators to begin forensic authentication.

Pike said, “I told you I wouldn't discuss custody before there's a case.”

Evelyn replied, “There won't need to be a case once she signs.”

Garrett slammed a folder on the table. “She thinks having a baby makes her untouchable.”

“You promised nobody would get hurt,” Pike said.

“I promised nothing,” Evelyn answered.

The clip ended there. It did not show an assault, but it made the family's explanation of an innocent domestic disagreement look increasingly impossible.

A separate file showed Chloe speaking straight into the camera, pale and frightened.

“Mom,” she said, “I know you'll want to come after them. Please don't. Just make sure they can't do this to someone else.”

I held my breath until my chest hurt.

She continued, “I kept copies because they said they could make me look guilty. I thought if I had proof, they'd let me leave. I was wrong.”

Her hand shook as she reached toward the screen. “I love you. If I get out, we're going to make pancakes, and I'm never going to complain about your terrible coffee again.”

I laughed and cried at once.

That night, Ortiz called with an update: Garrett had been taken into custody on charges related to the attack, subject to the court process. Evelyn's lawyers were responding to a request for an interview.

Before I could thank her, she added, “Sam, Judge Pike is missing.”

Chapter 15 - The Judge's Empty OfficePike's chambers were open, his car sat at home, and no one could reach him. He had missed a scheduled hearing, which was unlike him. Investigators couldn't assume why. Perhaps he was hiding. Perhaps he was frightened. Perhaps something had happened.
Chapter 16 - What the Judge WantedAfter the interview, I went outside and found Natalie waiting beneath the courthouse awning. We had never met face-to-face. She looked ordinary in the best possible way: worn boots, a green coat, hair blown loose by the weather. There was no trace of the villain Evelyn had described in all those family stories.
Chapter 17 - The Inheritance TrapThe trust was older than Chloe, older than Garrett, older even than Evelyn's marriage. Its language was dense, but Nora's team untangled the main issue: after the birth of a qualifying descendant, certain assets would be placed under a new arrangement. Evelyn feared losing the influence she'd exercised for years.
Chapter 18 - My Old CaseNine years earlier, I had helped investigate a state contractor who diverted public funds through supposedly respectable charities. The case ended in convictions, but my work had made powerful enemies. Among the people questioned, though never charged in that case, was a young financial adviser named Evelyn Harrington.
Chapter 19 - The Verdict Isn't a CureThe legal process took months, not hours. Bail hearings, filings, expert reports, and arguments filled days that felt like years. Garrett and Evelyn denied the allegations and fought the charges. Prosecutors presented the medical evidence, witness testimony, authenticated recordings, and records showing attempts to pressure Chloe into signing financial documents.
Chapter 20 - The Sound of MorningThere was one more thing Chloe insisted on doing after Hazel came home. She asked me to take her to the bus stop where police had found her. I wanted to refuse. I imagined the cold pavement, the empty road, the hours of fear.
