Chapter 17 - The Inheritance TrapThe trust was older than Chloe, older than Garrett, older even than Evelyn's marriage. Its language was dense, but Nora's team untangled the main issue: after the birth of a qualifying descendant, certain assets would be placed under a new arrangement. Evelyn feared losing the influence she'd exercised for years.

Chloe's pregnancy had made that deadline real.
“They wanted the baby,” I said, horrified. “Just not Chloe.”
“It's possible they wanted control,” Nora corrected. “We can show what the draft agreements proposed. Motive is something prosecutors will have to establish.”
The distinction mattered. For once in my life, I let someone else be precise while I was angry.
Prosecutors reviewed whether to pursue additional charges supported by the evidence. Rosa gave a detailed statement. Theo confirmed the car's movements. Natalie traveled from Maine to meet investigators and provide her records. The recovered files were examined independently so no defense could reasonably call them a mother's invented story.
Meanwhile, Chloe continued her exhausting work of recovery. Some days she recognized a photograph and laughed at a joke. Some days she couldn't tolerate light or conversation. Her progress was real, but it didn't follow a neat straight line.
I read baby-name lists beside her bed. “Hazel?” I suggested.
She made a face.
“Oliver?”
She blinked twice, our agreed signal for no.
“Okay, tough crowd. Your father wanted to name you after a mountain, remember?”
She managed the smallest laugh, then immediately looked worn out. I stopped and held her hand.
That evening, Ortiz called. Evelyn had agreed to appear for a recorded interview with counsel. Then, just before the scheduled time, officers attempting to serve additional legal paperwork found the estate's private safe open and a section of files gone.
