Chapter 16 - A Price for the Truth

Calvin had been stopped near the state line. He cooperated enough to confirm that Nora had been moved twice, then demanded immunity. Investigators made no promise they couldn't lawfully keep. Meanwhile, they checked phone records, toll cameras, and locations tied to the SUV.
Lily paced the hospital waiting room. “She raised me alone,” she said. “When I got sick, she worked double shifts. When I was scared, she'd sit beside my bed until morning. I can't lose her because your family wanted its secrets.”
“You won't face this by yourself,” I said.
She looked at me. “You keep saying that. Do you mean it when it gets inconvenient?”
I thought of every time Grace had asked for help and I'd advised patience. “I do now.”
Grace's contractions settled for the moment. Dr. Patel told us that was encouraging but not a guarantee. We listened, asked questions, and stayed with what we knew.
By midnight police identified an unused apartment above a garden supply store. When they entered, Nora was there, exhausted and dehydrated but conscious. She'd been held under threats that Lily would be harmed if she left or spoke. Officers took her for medical evaluation and documented her account.
Lily and I sat shoulder to shoulder watching the vending machine swallow a dollar bill without giving up its crackers. Under any other circumstances, it might have been funny. 'He bought me a blue coat once,' she said of Father. 'I wore it until the sleeves stopped fitting.' I remembered a navy coat in a photograph that he'd claimed was a charity donation. We traded fragments of memory like strangers comparing maps, and somehow each small detail made the other easier to understand.
Lily collapsed into a chair when Vega called with the news. She laughed and cried at once. I put my arm around her, unsure whether I had the right. She leaned into me anyway.
Then Nora asked to speak with me.
She sat beneath a hospital blanket and looked older than in the photograph, but her voice was steady. “Your father was going to expose the transfers,” she said. “He had an appointment with the board the morning after he died.”
“What happened to him?”
Nora shook her head. “I don't know who caused the crash. But I know who took the evidence from his car.”
May you like
“Who?”
She looked past me at the hallway. “Your mother.”
