Chapter 9 - The River Doesn't Keep Secrets

Detective Vega warned us not to approach the property. Police reached the river house first, a weathered two-story cabin hidden behind sycamores. Nobody answered the door. The SUV from the wedding was parked inside a detached garage.

I waited with Lily and Priya outside the marked perimeter, helpless and furious. When officers came out, Nora wasn't with them. They found a blanket, a half-empty water bottle, and a broken phone on a kitchen counter. The room looked recently occupied, but it didn't tell us by whom.

“Someone knew we were coming,” Lily said.

Vega didn't speculate. “We're looking into it.”

Back at the hospital, Grace had another round of monitoring. She was exhausted, but the baby remained stable. I told her Nora was missing and watched Grace's face tighten.

“She gave me one more thing,” Grace whispered. “I thought it was just a memory card. It was sewn into the inside seam of the blue envelope.”

During the long wait, Lily showed me photographs on her phone. Nora with flour on her cheek. Nora at a graduation, clapping so hard her hands blurred. Nora asleep in a chair after a night shift. In every picture, she looked at Lily the way Grace looked at the tiny heartbeat on a monitor. Whoever had taken Nora had not taken an abstract witness. They had taken a whole lifetime of love from a daughter who was still waiting for her mother to come home.

Priya checked the envelope. The narrow seam was thicker than paper. Inside lay a microSD card in a clear plastic sleeve.

We took it to a digital forensics specialist rather than inserting it into a personal laptop. Hours later, he provided read-only copies of the files and a hash record. Several spreadsheets listed donors, grants, and transfers. An audio file contained my father's voice, much younger than I remembered.

“Evelyn,” he said, “this money belongs to families who need homes. I won't let you use it as leverage.”

Mother answered, cold and sharp. “Then you'd better think about what happens to your other family.”

The recording stopped. Lily covered her mouth.

A final file was titled THOMAS_FINAL. Priya clicked it. On screen appeared a photograph of my father's car, its hood crumpled against a concrete barrier.

Beneath it was a typed message: That accident was not an accident.
