Chapter 13 - The Lake House

Police raided the lake house before dawn.
I was not allowed to go.
That was probably wise.
By noon, Ruiz called.
“You were right about the records.”
“What did you find?”
“Ledgers. Phones. old computers. Payments. Surveillance files.”
“And my father?”
“We found a file with his name.”
I stopped breathing.
“What’s in it?”
“I can’t discuss all of it yet.”
“Detective.”
She sighed.
“There are messages between Marcus and your mother from the week your father died.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What do they say?”
“One message from Marcus says, ‘Cross will adjust the dosage tonight.’ Another from your mother says, ‘He cannot sign anything tomorrow.’”
I closed my eyes.
The room tilted.
Claire came beside me and put her hand on my back.
Ruiz continued.
“We still need medical experts to interpret what was done. But we now have probable cause for a broader investigation.”
My father had not imagined the danger.
He had documented it.
And they had silenced him before he could finish.
By afternoon, Marcus was arrested on financial charges and unlawful restraint related to Victor.
My mother was not arrested.
Yet.
Her attorney insisted the messages were taken out of context.
Then she appeared at Monday’s court hearing wearing pearls and a gray suit.
She looked composed until Victor entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.
Her eyes found him.
For one second, the mask dropped.
Fear.
Victor testified under oath.
He admitted helping hide financial transfers. He admitted disabling the balcony camera. He admitted that Evelyn had ordered him to do it.
Then my mother’s attorney stood.
“Mr. Hale, you are a confessed criminal seeking leniency. Why should anyone believe you?”
Victor looked toward my mother.
“They shouldn’t.”
Her attorney smiled.
Then Victor added, “That’s why I kept recordings.”
The smile vanished.
He reached into the evidence folder and identified a small digital recorder seized from the lake house.
Ruiz had not told me about it.
The judge allowed one recording to be played.

My mother’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Once Claire has the baby, Nathan will never reverse the trust. It has to happen before then.”
