Chapter 6 - My Father’s Warning

My father had always been quiet.

Not weak. Quiet.

He could walk into a boardroom, say seven words, and make twenty people rewrite a contract. At home, though, he let my mother fill every silence.

After his death, I told myself that meant they had understood each other.

Now I wondered if he had simply gotten tired of fighting.

Daniel and I spent the night going through scanned files from our father’s old office.

We found transfers to consulting companies that barely existed. We found loans that had been forgiven. We found one wire for $2.8 million to Hale Strategic Services.

Victor Hale.

“What kind of driver gets paid almost three million dollars?” Daniel asked.

“The kind who does more than drive.”

Claire slept while we worked.

At 2:10 a.m., Daniel found a calendar entry.

E.M. / V.H. / legal restructure before next generation.

The meeting date was eight months earlier.

Two weeks before Claire got pregnant.

My throat tightened.

“Next generation,” Daniel said.

“I see it.”

At sunrise, Detective Ruiz called.

Victor had been located.

Not arrested.

Located.

His passport had been scanned in Toronto, then disappeared from the system. He had probably used a second identity.

“Do you believe he acted for my mother?” I asked.

“We believe he had help,” Ruiz said carefully. “But belief isn’t evidence.”

“I have financial records.”

“Send them.”

I did.

An hour later, my mother arrived at the hospital with two attorneys.

Security stopped her outside Claire’s floor.

She called me.

“I am not leaving until I see my daughter-in-law.”

“You are not seeing her.”

“She is confused.”

“She is injured.”

“Nathan, listen to yourself. Do you really think I would hurt my own grandchild?”

I looked through the glass at Claire’s hand resting over her stomach.

“I think you care more about controlling this family than loving it.”

My mother went silent.

Then she said, almost softly, “Your father said something like that once.”

I froze.

“What happened after he said it?”

She hung up.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel burst into the room.

He was holding his phone.

“Nate.”

“What?”

“I just got access to Dad’s old cloud backup.”

He looked sick.

“There’s an audio file recorded three days before he died.”

He pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If Evelyn finds out I changed the trust, I don’t know what she’ll do.”
