Chapter 11 - What the Captain Knew

We found Dad alone in his study, surrounded by retirement plaques and photographs of smiling crews.

He watched us enter like a man waiting for a sentence.

"I gave him a key," he admitted. "But not to hurt you."

"That's becoming your favorite line," I said.

He swallowed. "Kessler told me he'd leave both my daughters alone if I cooperated."

"He never intended to leave anyone alone," Torres said. "He wanted leverage."

Dad rubbed his hands together. "I knew he was corrupt. I didn't know about the ambush until afterward."

"Then why didn't you speak up?" I asked.

He looked at the photograph of my mother on the mantel. "Because I was a coward. And once I'd lied once, every new lie seemed easier than telling the truth."

It was the first honest sentence I'd heard from him in five years. It didn't make the damage disappear.

Torres asked for his phone, banking records, emails, and every contact Kessler had used. Dad gave them over. His hands trembled so badly he dropped his phone twice.

Chloe stood at the doorway. "You let me call her a disgrace. Every Christmas, every birthday. You knew she might have been telling the truth."

Dad didn't answer.

"You watched me tear her shirt," Chloe said. "You watched."

That finally made him look up. "I know."

"No," she said. "I don't think you do."

I wanted to be satisfied. Instead I felt exhausted. This was what I'd dreamed of hearing, but the apology didn't revive Ben's missing years or erase the memory of Amina screaming for her mother.

Torres's phone chimed. She read the message and grew still.

"The book's been found," she said. "Kessler dumped it outside the harbor."

"Then we have the key," Ben said.

"Not exactly." Torres turned the screen. Every page had been soaked in bleach. The writing was gone.

I stared at the ruined cover. Then I remembered the thing Mom always made us do when a storm knocked out the lights.

"Chloe," I said, "what did we use as bookmarks?"

May you like

Her eyes widened. "The old family photographs."
