Chapter 6 - The Other Survivor

Back at the club, a federal investigator introduced herself as Special Agent Maya Torres. She had a calm voice, tired eyes, and no patience for the Sterling family drama.
"We have twenty minutes before midnight," she said. "Tell me everything."
Vale explained Kessler's suspected connection to a military contracting ring. Dad sat with his elbows on his knees. Chloe kept insisting she hadn't meant to help anybody dangerous.
"You tried to expose your sister in front of strangers," Torres said. "Intent isn't a magic eraser."
Chloe stopped talking.
Torres turned to me. "We found someone who remembers Meridian differently from the official record."
She set a tablet on the desk. A woman appeared on the screen, older than the teenager I'd once hauled through gunfire. Amina Hassan wore hospital scrubs and a look of practiced determination.
"Harper?" she whispered.
My lungs forgot their job.
"Amina."
She covered her mouth, then laughed and cried at the same time. "They told me you died."
"They told me you did."
For several seconds we said nothing. In the silence, five lost years stood between us.
Amina had been taken to a medical compound after the ambush and moved under an assumed name. She was now a nurse in Virginia. She'd been trying to reach military investigators for months because a man had contacted her, offering money for a certain thumb drive.
"I never had it," she said. "But Ben did. He gave it to you when he couldn't walk."
Ben Ortiz. My friend. The last man I'd heard over the radio before the helicopter lifted off.
Memory flashed: his bloody hand pressing a small object against my palm. A promise I made while smoke tore through my throat.
I reached to the inside seam of the jacket Vale had given me, as if that old object might still be there.
Torres watched my face. "Where is the drive?"
"I hid it before they airlifted me," I said. "I thought everybody had forgotten."
The office clock rolled to 12:00.

Every phone in the room lit up with the same video: footage of the Meridian convoy, edited to show me giving the order that sent it into the ambush.
