Chapter 18 - The Truth at Gunpoint

Torres split the teams anyway. She refused to let Grant define our choices.

I rode with the officers headed for the warehouse. Chloe came as far as the perimeter and stayed behind the barricade, pale but determined. Vale coordinated from the command vehicle.

Inside, Dad sat in a chair under a hanging work light. Grant stood a few feet away, one hand gripping a pistol, the other holding a phone.

"You came," Grant said when I stepped into view.

"You asked."

"Where's the backup?"

"Safe."

He laughed without humor. "You never learned how this works. Whoever controls the information controls the story."

"Not anymore."

I kept him talking. He bragged about forged orders and paid witnesses, about how easily people accepted my disappearance because it fit the story my father preferred. He admitted ordering the ambush to protect an illegal supply network, then blamed Kessler for letting survivors escape.

What he didn't know was that Torres had opened a live audio channel through the phone in my jacket. Every word went to investigators waiting outside.

Dad lifted his head. Blood ran from his lip.

"Harper," he said, "I signed the release. I took the money. I let them blame you. I won't let them do it again."

Grant swung the gun toward him. "Shut up."

Dad pushed himself to his feet. For a terrible second I thought he meant to rush the gun. Instead, he raised both hands and took one deliberate step away from me, pulling Grant's attention with him.

That was enough.

A tactical team entered through the side door. A flash of movement. A shouted command. Grant dropped the pistol when a less-lethal round struck his arm. Officers pinned him to the floor.

I ran to Dad. He was breathing, shaken, alive.

He looked up at me. "I'm sorry."

I held pressure against the cut on his forehead. "Stay awake. We'll talk later."

Torres's radio crackled. The team at the airport had stopped Kessler's vehicle. He was in custody.

Then she received an urgent call from the evidence lab. A technician had found a hidden file on Ben's drive. It was titled THE FINAL ORDER.

The listed author was not Grant or Kessler.
