Chapter 19 - The Runway

Brooke never made it to county lockup.

During transfer from the hospital, a fake road accident forced the transport van to stop. Evan ambushed the officers and pulled her out.

By the time police reached the airfield, he had dragged her onto the runway beside a small charter plane.

I watched the live helicopter feed from Dad’s hospital room.

Brooke stood in front of Evan with his arm around her neck and a gun against her jaw.

She looked tiny.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just terrified.

Dad sat beside me in a wheelchair.

Mom held his hand.

For once, nobody lied.

Evan shouted at police to move back. He wanted fuel, clear airspace, and ten minutes.

Detective Reed spoke through a loudspeaker.

“Evan, it’s over.”

“No,” Evan shouted. “It’s over when I’m gone.”

Brooke suddenly turned her head and bit his wrist.

The gun jerked away.

She ran.

Evan fired.

The bullet hit the pavement inches behind her.

Police opened fire on a tire of the car beside him, using the vehicle for cover as officers advanced.

Evan sprinted toward the plane.

Brooke stumbled and fell.

He turned back toward her.

That mistake ended it.

Detective Reed tackled him from the side before he could fire again.

Two officers piled on.

The gun skidded across the runway.

Brooke lay on the pavement sobbing.

Evan screamed that everyone had betrayed him.

I almost laughed.

The man who had built his entire life on betrayal was offended when it came back to him.

Police cuffed him.

Dad exhaled beside me.

“It’s done.”

I looked at the screen.

“No,” I said. “Now we tell the truth.”

Dad looked at me.

He knew what I meant.

Not just Evan’s truth.

Not just Brooke’s.

His too.

The next morning, before lawyers could stop us, Dad asked Detective Reed to bring him a statement form.

He confessed to signing the unsafe facility waiver.

And then he said, “Whatever happens to me, the families deserve the whole story.”
