Chapter 8 - The Man Who Saw the Whole Thing

Eli Parker answered my call from the bakery loading dock.
"I shouldn't have posted that," he said. "I still need my job."
Eli had been our night baker since high school. He was tall, permanently dusted with flour, and incapable of pretending that a burnt pie tasted good. Mom had trusted him with the sourdough starter.
"Did you see Corinne kick the table?" I asked.
"I saw more than that. I was delivering the holiday cookie trays. She told me to leave them by the door and wait outside. Through the window I saw her filming. Then she shoved the table with her foot."
"Why didn't you tell Dad?"
"I did. He said it was a family misunderstanding and told me to get back to work."
For a moment I couldn't find words. Dad had known I didn't break the house. He had let me kneel there anyway.
Eli continued. "There's something else. Corinne had me move the real bakery's holiday display to storage the day before. Said we were shutting down early for an inspection."
"An inspection of what?"
"Didn't say. But this morning a guy in a Mercer jacket was measuring the loading area."
I asked Eli to write down what he'd seen. He agreed, then said, "Tess, I grew up eating your mom's cinnamon rolls. I won't lie for somebody who never learned my last name."
Maya asked whether anyone had installed an indoor camera at Dad's house. I remembered the small pet camera in the living room, angled toward the window where Dad's aging spaniel used to sleep. The dog had died in spring. Nobody had moved the camera.
Grandma had the app because she used to feed him during Dad's shifts. We opened the recordings.
There was Corinne, eleven minutes before Grandma arrived, checking her lipstick. There was Corinne positioning her phone on the mantel. There was Corinne pulling one leg of the display table loose, then kicking it when I entered.
My stomach turned.
May you like
And after I knelt, the recording caught words I hadn't heard through my tears.
Corinne muttered into her phone, "Good. Now they'll believe she'll destroy the real one, too."
