Chapter 9 - The Inspection Nobody Ordered

Maya replayed the last sentence twice.
"The real one," she said. "She's talking about the bakery."
That afternoon, I walked into Bell & Flour expecting to smell bread. Instead, I smelled dust and cold metal. Somebody had opened the ceiling panels over the prep station. Yellow tape blocked the back oven.
A county inspector named Leon Price stood beside the electrical box while Corinne spoke to him in her bright public voice.
"We're devastated, of course. The building is dangerous."
"Who called you?" I asked him.
Corinne spun around. "Tessa, you shouldn't be here."
"I'm an owner."
Price checked his clipboard. "We received a complaint regarding exposed wiring and water intrusion."
"From whom?"
"Complaints can be confidential."
I looked at the ceiling. We'd patched that leak in October. Rina had the invoice from a licensed roofer. Now a wet stain stretched across a panel that had been dry two days earlier.
Price wasn't interested in our family fight. He identified a damaged circuit, documented the hazard, and ordered us to stop using that section of the kitchen pending repair.
"That part is real," he told me. "Whatever caused it, don't touch it until an electrician clears it."
I appreciated his plainness. I was tired of people making facts sound like favors.
When Price left, Corinne folded her arms. "There you go. Even the county knows this place is falling apart."
"The electrician who fixed that circuit is coming tomorrow," I replied. "He can tell us what changed."
Her eyes darted toward the panel.
Dad emerged from the office, looking sick. "Tess, let's talk somewhere private."
"You knew she broke the gingerbread house."
He stopped walking.
"And you knew she'd post that video."
"I didn't know about the video."
"But you knew about the table."
His silence said enough.
I wanted to shout. Instead, I handed him a printed photograph of Mom standing beneath the bakery sign on opening day.

"You said you were protecting our family," I told him. "Which part of the family were you protecting?"
Before he could answer, Rina burst in from the storeroom. "You need to see this. The electrical panel didn't fail on its own."
