Chapter 13 - The Rope

The words took me back to the water so fast I could smell diesel.

Jonah was wedged beneath the overturned supply truck. I had reached him by clinging to a cable stretched between the bridge supports. His vest was hooked on twisted steel. A rescue rope ran from my waist to a tree on shore. Dwayne had tied the knot with a hand that wouldn't stop bleeding.

"Cut me loose," Jonah said when I found him.

"Shut up. I'm getting you out."

"The truck's shifting. If it takes you down, they'll lose two."

I tried to free his vest. The current slammed a branch into my arm. Bone snapped. He screamed my name and shoved the little recorder toward me. Then the cable jerked, pinning us both.

I did not cut Jonah loose. I cut the snagged tether from my own harness when the line threatened to drag rescuers into the channel. I held on to him until the metal shifted again. My last clear memory was his hand pushing me toward air.

The official record said I was swept downstream. It did not say I abandoned him. But I had spent six years quietly putting myself on trial.

I told Brody that now, sitting on the bleachers. His eyes filled.

"Mercer doesn't know what happened under the truck," he said. "He's guessing because you never talked about it."

"He knows enough to hurt Leah."

"Then we tell her everything."

We went to Leah's lawyer together. For the first time, I described each moment in the water without pretending I remembered what I couldn't. The attorney took notes. Leah sat beside me, close enough that our shoulders touched.

When I finished, she asked one question. "Did Jonah know you were trying?"

"Yes."

"Then stop calling it failure."

My phone rang before I could answer. It was the investigator.

"Major, the recorder has usable audio," she said. "We need you and Mrs. Owens here as soon as possible."

Her next words left all three of us speechless.

"It contains a conversation recorded fifteen minutes before the convoy reached the bridge."
