Chapter 15 - The Price of Silence

The agent stopped the audio. "We need to establish when that final exchange was recorded," she said. "The device may have been turned on later. We won't assume the entire file comes from one continuous event."
I appreciated her precision. It kept the truth from becoming another story somebody could bend.
A forensic review later showed Dad had switched the recorder on during a meeting at his hardware store three weeks after the flood. Jonah's earlier audio remained on the device, and Dad had captured Mercer trying to make him destroy it.

"Do you forgive him?"
"Forgiveness isn't a press release."
"What do you want people to know?"
I watched the river slide around the stones. "That Jonah Owens tried to stop a dangerous crossing. That the other soldiers fought to keep each other alive. And that sometimes the person everyone calls a hero is the one who needs to tell the truth the most."

The story aired at six. At seven, Brody called, his voice tight.
"Erin, someone just drove through the front window of Mom's house. She's inside."
