Chapter 15 - The Airport Call

I did not go to the airport.
Every angry part of me wanted to.
Every smart person in the room told me not to.
Airport police stopped Vanessa at the gate.
Not because she was trying to flee.
Leaving the country was not illegal.
They stopped her because the sheriff had issued a preservation order on the safe and lockbox identified as possible trust property, and she was carrying the lockbox through security.
By 6:30 p.m., the box was sealed as evidence.
Vanessa was allowed to leave the airport but not with it.
She did not board the flight.
She also did not come home.
She checked into a hotel under her maiden name.
At 8:00, I sat at Dad’s dining table for the first time in months.
Kyle sat across from me.
Neither of us ate.
The house felt different without Vanessa.
Not peaceful.
More like a room after a fire alarm stops.
Your ears keep waiting for the next sound.
Kyle stared at his hands.
“She wasn’t always like this.”
I looked at him.
“Don’t.”
“I’m not defending her.”
“It sounds like it.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Silence.
Then he said, “When my dad left, she worked two jobs. She used to skip dinner so I could eat.”
I said nothing.
“That doesn’t excuse this.”
“No.”
“I just keep trying to figure out when she became somebody who could steal from you, lie in court, and burn papers.”
“Maybe people don’t become one thing all at once.”
He looked at me.
I thought of my mother accepting money from Vanessa to pay medical bills.
Of Dad hiding legal protections instead of confronting his marriage directly.
Of Kyle signing a lie because his mother asked.
Of me ignoring every warning sign because I wanted to believe family meant safety.
“Maybe it’s a thousand small choices,” I said.
The doorbell rang.
Benjamin stood outside holding a padded evidence envelope.
“The sheriff released a copy of one item from the lockbox after photographing it.”
Inside was a letter.
Not to me.
To my mother.
Rebecca,
I know I hurt you. I know leaving our marriage broke something I cannot repair.
But you were right about Vanessa.
I ignored too much because I was ashamed to admit I had made another bad choice.
If anything happens to me, protect Grace from my cowardice.
Do not let her believe my silence meant I loved her less.
—Thomas
I stopped reading.
I put the letter down.
For years, I had wanted Dad to come back from the dead and explain himself.
Now he had.
It did not make me feel better.
It made me furious.
He knew.
He knew Vanessa was dangerous to my future, and instead of leaving her, he hid protections in a trust.
Benjamin’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression sharpened.
“What exactly did the forensic team find?”
He walked into the hall.
A minute later he returned.
“What?” I asked.
He set the phone down.
“The lockbox contained account ledgers.”
“For the trust?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“There are payments to someone we haven’t discussed.”
“Who?”
Benjamin looked at Kyle.
May you like
Then at me.
“Your mother.”
