Chapter 5 - The Visitor

The doorbell rang again.
Claire moved toward Noah first.
Ethan moved toward the front door.
“Don’t,” Claire whispered.
He checked the camera feed on the wall monitor.
A woman stood on the porch.
Mid-forties. Dark wool coat. Hair pulled back. No package. No clipboard.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then held up a business card.
Ethan zoomed in.
MARA REEVES — FORENSIC ACCOUNTING.
Claire frowned. “Do you know her?”
“No.”
Mara spoke toward the doorbell camera. “Mr. Parker, I’m here about funds transferred through Northline Development.”
Ethan’s pulse jumped.
Northline was the company Ryan had named in the agreement.
Claire said, “Open the door.”
“Ryan literally told us not to.”
“Ryan is the reason we’re here.”
Ethan opened it but kept the chain latched.
Mara gave him a tired look. “That chain won’t help if the problem is inside your bank account.”
Claire almost smiled.
“What do you want?” Ethan asked.
“To keep you from losing your house.”
That got his attention.
Mara slid a folder through the gap.
Inside were transfer records.
Ethan recognized his $84,000.
Then another number.
$310,000.
Then $127,500.
Then $64,200.
All routed through the same account.
“Your brother didn’t invest your money,” Mara said. “He used it to patch a hole in a larger fraud.”
Claire’s hand tightened on Ethan’s shoulder.
Mara continued. “The man in the photograph is Victor Dane. He runs private lending operations that stay just barely legal until they don’t.”
“What does that have to do with us?” Ethan asked.
Mara looked past him into the house.
Her eyes stopped on Noah.
“Everything, if Ryan listed your address as collateral contact.”
Claire stepped in front of Noah instinctively.
Ethan felt a wave of anger so clean it steadied him.
“What do we do?”
Mara handed him a second sheet.
“First, you freeze every account Ryan can reach. Second, you document every contact. Third, you decide whether protecting Ryan is worth risking your family.”
A black SUV rolled slowly past the house.
May you like
Mara watched it go.
Then she said, “Actually, you may need to decide faster than I thought.”\n\nMara did not step inside until Claire asked her to. Once she did, she photographed the transfer pages and explained each line in plain English. Ethan hated how simple it sounded when someone competent described it: money in, money moved, promises made, signatures exposed. The disaster he had spent weeks telling himself was complicated suddenly looked brutally straightforward.
