Chapter 7 - The Photo

Ethan called 911.
The men behind the house were gone before the patrol car arrived.
One officer took notes. Another checked the yard. Neither found anything except two muddy prints near the patio.
When Ethan showed them the text, the older officer’s expression changed.
“Keep your wife where she is,” he said. “And tell her not to post location updates.”
“She doesn’t.”
“Then someone followed her.”
Ethan called Claire.
He hated telling her.
He hated the silence after he told her even more.
“You need to leave Lena’s,” he said.
“With a two-year-old at ten at night?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Mara knows a hotel near the airport. Security, cameras, private parking.”
Claire whispered something to her sister, then came back on the line.
“This is insane.”
“I know.”
“No, Ethan. You don’t get to say that like you’re standing beside me in it. You created the hole and now the rest of us are falling through.”
He closed his eyes.
“You’re right.”
She went quiet.
It was the first time he had said it without adding a reason.
Claire finally said, “Text me the hotel.”
An hour later, Mara arrived at Ethan’s house with a laptop and a box of bank records.
“You look terrible,” she said.
“Thanks.”
“It wasn’t a criticism.”
They worked at the kitchen table until after midnight.
Mara traced transactions while Ethan searched old emails from Ryan.
At 1:17 a.m., Ethan found a message he had ignored months earlier.
FROM: Ryan Parker
SUBJECT: just in case
The attachment was password protected.
“What password would your brother use?” Mara asked.
Ethan tried birthdays. Teams. Their mother’s maiden name.
Nothing.
Then he remembered a phrase Ryan used when they were kids.
“Last one home.”
The file opened.
Inside was a spreadsheet of names, dates, transfers, and handwritten notes scanned into the margins.
Mara leaned closer.
“Oh, Ryan,” she whispered.
Ethan pointed at one line.
CLAIRE PARKER — AUTHORIZED SIGNER.
He stared at it.
Claire had never authorized anything.
Then Mara clicked a linked document.
A signature appeared.

Claire’s signature.
Forged.\n\nThe officer helped Ethan enable alerts on every account and advised him to save screenshots in more than one place. Small steps. Boring steps. Ethan clung to them because boring suddenly felt safe. He had spent too much time believing one bold move could rescue him. The bold move had been the beginning of this.
