Chapter 17 - The Memory I BuriedI remembered the picnic: blue balloons, lemonade, Grandpa's ridiculous straw hat. I had been ten, and he'd taken me to the warehouse afterward because I begged to see where the food for our community events came from.

I remembered a loading dock and a man shouting. I remembered a woman with copper-red hair closing a truck door. Then a loud bang. For years, I'd mistaken it for something harmless, a fallen pallet or a truck backfiring.
"Vivian was there," I whispered.
Denise nodded. "Curtis said a little girl saw her. He wouldn't tell me your name. He thought protecting you meant keeping you out of it."
We played the cassette. Curtis described seeing Vivian remove donation labels from empty cartons and replace them with shipping seals. He said Adrian had waved through a truck that never should have cleared inspection.
"And the little girl?" Grandpa asked on the recording.
"Samuel's granddaughter saw me arguing with them," Curtis said. "Don't bring her here again."
I held the photo close. My childhood wasn't a secret code. I hadn't witnessed a murder or heard a confession. I'd seen something suspicious and been too young to understand it. That mattered, but we would not pretend it proved more.
Tessa arranged for me to give investigators a careful account without rehearsed answers. I described the loading dock, the red hair, and the noise. I also told them what I did not remember.
On the way out, Dad stood beside the car.
"I should never have taken you there," he said.
"Grandpa took me," I replied. "And people doing something wrong are responsible for it. Not a ten-year-old kid."
He looked stricken. "I wasted a lot of years thinking I could buy safety."
"You can still choose honesty."
My phone buzzed. Lena had sent me a message: Vivian's full supermarket video had just appeared online from an anonymous account, unedited, along with a statement claiming she acted on instructions from corporate.

Then another message arrived from Lena.
She's at our store right now. She's demanding to see you.
