Chapter 18 - Back at Lane SixI returned to Bellwether with Tessa and Mom. Dad offered to come, but this time I told him I needed to stand there without him beside me. He understood.

Vivian waited near lane six. She looked smaller in a gray coat, but her eyes still held the same quick calculation. A few customers recognized us and lifted their phones.
"Put those away," I said. "Nobody needs another show."
Vivian glanced at the register. "I owe you an apology."
"Then say one without an audience."
We stepped into the customer-service office. Tessa remained at my side with Vivian's attorney on a secure call.
"I was told to provoke you," Vivian said. "Adrian said Daniel would react publicly. Marcus could use it to argue he was unstable. I thought it was just a humiliating little scene."
"Just?"
"I didn't think it would follow you home."
"You filmed me. You helped make that happen."
Her hands shook. "They threatened to expose my charity records if I refused."
"Those records hurt real people," I replied. "Children were supposed to get meals. Workers were supposed to get paid. A man died after reporting what he saw."
Vivian looked at the floor. For once, she didn't tell anyone else to pick something up.
"I have emails," she said. "Proof of the staged complaint. And messages about the invoices."
"Then give them to investigators," Tessa replied. "Not to me as a private bargain."
Vivian agreed to have her lawyer arrange a lawful transfer. No one promised immunity, forgiveness, or a clean reputation.
When we left the office, Todd met me by the register.
"The company wants to reinstate you and issue a correction," he said.
"I appreciate the correction. But I'm not coming back under the same complaint system."
"What do you want?"
"A reporting channel employees can trust, even when the complaint is about management."
May you like
Todd nodded, slowly. "I'll take that upstairs."
His radio crackled. Security asked him to come to the back entrance. Marcus Vale had arrived with a private security team and was demanding access to the executive offices.
