Chương 18 - The Last Deal

They found Miriam at the Cross Foundation headquarters.

She had used an old board-member keycard to enter after hours.

By the time Evelyn arrived with police, Miriam was standing in Richard's former office overlooking the city.

She held no weapon.

Only a folder.

Grant was already there.

“Mom,” he said, voice raw. “What are you doing?”

Miriam looked at Evelyn.

“Making sure Victor can't buy his way out.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were handwritten payment records going back ten years.

Evelyn stared. “You kept copies.”

“I kept everything.”

“Why?”

“At first? Insurance.”

Miriam gave a broken smile. “Later? Guilt.”

Grant looked at her like he was seeing a stranger.

“Why didn't you give this to police?”

“Because some of the names are powerful.”

Detective Ortiz stepped forward. “That is exactly why you give it to us.”

Miriam shook her head. “You think Victor is the top? He isn't.”

Everyone went still.

Evelyn asked, “Who is?”

Miriam looked at the city lights.

“Halston is a machine. Victor runs money, not protection.”

“Who protects them?”

Miriam turned back.

“Judge Raymond Pike.”

Ethan swore quietly.

Pike was a federal judge.

His name carried national weight.

Miriam continued. “He killed investigations. Sealed warrants. Warned Victor about subpoenas.”

Ortiz's expression hardened. “Do you have proof?”

Miriam held up the folder.

“Every payment.”

Then the office windows lit with red and blue reflections.

Police vehicles filled the street below.

Miriam looked confused.

Ortiz checked her phone.

Her face went tight.

“Federal agents are coming up.”

Evelyn felt a flicker of relief.

Then Ortiz added, “They have a warrant for Ethan.”

Evelyn turned.

“What?”

Ethan stared at her.

The elevator doors opened.

Six federal agents stepped out.

The lead agent approached Ethan.

“Ethan Cole, you're under arrest for obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.”

Evelyn's heart dropped.

“No,” Claire said. “That's impossible.”

The agent handcuffed Ethan.

Ethan did not resist.

He looked only at Evelyn.

“This is Pike.”

The agent pulled him away.

Evelyn stood frozen as the elevator doors closed.

Then Miriam whispered, “Victor told me Pike always keeps one emergency indictment ready.”

Grant looked at her. “Meaning?”

May you like

Miriam met Evelyn's eyes.

“Meaning Ethan was framed before any of us knew the game had started.”
