Chương 19 - The Hearing

Ethan spent the night in federal custody.
By morning, the case against him looked terrible.
Emails linked him to shell companies.
His digital signature appeared on transfer approvals.
A server log showed him deleting Halston files.
Evelyn recognized the pattern immediately.
It was the same method used to forge her signature.
But federal prosecutors did not care about instinct.
They wanted proof.
Claire found it.
At 4:40 a.m., she called Evelyn from the Cross Foundation office.
“I know what they did.”
Evelyn drove there with Grant.
Claire had Halston's archived authentication reports spread across a conference table.
“The forged approvals used Ethan's credentials,” she said, “but not his device key.”
Evelyn frowned.
“English.”
“His password was stolen. His computer wasn't used.”
Grant leaned over the page. “Whose device was?”
Claire pointed to a serial number.
Martin Shaw's office computer.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Martin had not framed Ethan.
But someone using Martin's system had.
Security logs from the building identified the access time.
2:13 a.m.
The same hour Ethan's badge had been used at the foundation months earlier.
Evelyn suddenly understood.
“The access badges were cloned.”
Claire nodded. “And I know who ordered the badge duplicator.”
Officer Daniels.
By 9:00 a.m., Detective Ortiz and federal internal-affairs officers had enough to challenge the evidence.
Ethan's emergency hearing began at noon.
Judge Raymond Pike presided.
Evelyn almost laughed at the arrogance of it.
The man Miriam had named as Halston's protector was sitting on the bench deciding whether Ethan stayed in jail.
Federal prosecutors presented their evidence.
Then Ethan's attorney introduced the device-authentication report.
Pike's face barely changed.
But Evelyn saw his fingers tighten around his pen.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Martin Shaw walked in.
Everyone turned.
He looked exhausted, unshaven, but alive.
Evelyn's breath caught.
Martin walked straight to the prosecutor and handed over a sealed evidence bag.
“I have the original badge-cloning device,” he said.
Pike's voice sharpened. “Mr. Shaw, sit down.”
Martin ignored him.
“And I have an audio recording of Judge Pike discussing the fabrication of charges against Ethan Cole.”
The courtroom erupted.
Pike stood.
“This hearing is adjourned.”
“No,” a voice said from the back.
Detective Ortiz entered with two federal marshals.
“Judge Raymond Pike, step away from the bench.”
Pike stared at her.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
The same fear Evelyn had seen on Ethan's face in the ballroom.
But this time, she knew exactly what it meant.
The system had finally turned toward the right man.
As marshals approached, Pike looked directly at Evelyn.
“You think this ends with me?”
May you like
Evelyn held his stare.
“No,” she said. “I think it starts with you.”
