Chapter 11 - The Debt in My Name

The lender's notice was thirty-eight pages of legal language wrapped around one awful claim: I had personally guaranteed a $950,000 loan for Nolan's development company, secured in part by Mercer Restoration equipment.
"I didn't sign it," I told Leah.
"Then we contest the authentication," she said. "But don't assume the lender will take your word over a digital record."
The signature platform logged approval at 2:16 p.m. on September 9. I remembered that day because a church roof had collapsed during a storm, and Malik and I spent six hours stabilizing the stone bell tower.
"I was forty feet in the air," I said.
Malik grinned grimly. "And you broke your phone. I had to lend you mine to call the crane."
A timestamped safety photo showed me on a church scaffold at 2:15 p.m., hands on a beam. Another showed my shattered phone. It wasn't conclusive, but it gave the lender reason to investigate.
"Who had the login?" Leah asked.
"Simone knew my passwords," I admitted. "I was careless."
"Trust isn't carelessness," Leah said. "But access controls still matter. Change everything today."
We filed a fraud dispute and secured the accounts. The lender held off enforcement while investigating. The missing money remained a problem.
I gathered the crew at the workshop before rumors could do worse damage.
"Someone may have stolen from this company," I told them. "We're cooperating with investigators. I'm not asking you to work for free or pretend everything is fine. You'll get honest updates every day."
A young apprentice named Eli asked whether the shop would close.
"Not if I can help it."
Malik stepped forward. "Walter gave me a job when nobody else would. I'm not leaving because some crooks found a printer."
The crew laughed, and for the first time in two days I felt something other than dread.

Then my phone rang. It was the principal from Mara's school.
"Mr. Mercer," she said carefully, "a video of your father is spreading online. Your daughter has seen it. Simone posted it with a story about you abandoning an elderly man."
