Chapter 9 - My Mother's Choice

I read Mom's letter twice before I could look at Dad.

Years earlier, I'd pushed for a risky expansion loan. Dad nearly mortgaged the shop to help me, but Mom blocked it and placed the property under an independently managed trust.

"I thought she didn't believe in me," I said.

"She believed in you," Dad replied. "She just knew that love and business require different safeguards."

The trust named Dad as the lifetime beneficiary and a local trust company as trustee. After his death, the land would pass to a community trade scholarship foundation, with our business retaining a long-term option to lease the buildings.

Mom wrote about teaching young people to build lasting things. She ended with a request: never mistake Walter's gentleness for permission.

Leah took a slow breath.

"If this trust was funded properly, Simone's claimed authority cannot simply override the trustee. We need certified trust records and a current title search."

"Can we stop the sale?"

"We have a strong path. I won't promise what I haven't verified."

I thought about the hundreds of times Simone had called my father forgetful. He'd forgotten the names of a few tools after surgery. He'd never forgotten what the workshop meant.

On the drive home, I finally asked the question I'd avoided.

"Dad, why didn't you call me?"

He watched the houses pass.

"I called. Three times in September. She said you were in meetings. Then she told me you agreed I should go to a facility."

I remembered Simone saying Dad had grown difficult. I remembered nodding while answering an email. Shame sat between us like another passenger.

"I should have checked."

"Yes," he said quietly. "You should have."

I didn't ask him to make me feel better.

At home, the front door stood open. The house was empty. Simone's clothes were gone, along with her laptop, the contents of our filing cabinet, and the photograph of Mara from the mantel.

On the kitchen counter sat a sealed envelope addressed to me.

Inside was a petition asking the county probate court to appoint Simone as my father's emergency guardian.
