Chapter 15 - The Drawer Behind the Flour

Dad's phone had been wrapped in a kitchen towel and shoved into the deep pantry drawer behind a bag of flour. Judith had watched Simone put it there. A detective retrieved it with Dad's permission, documented where it was found, and arranged for its messages to be preserved.

There were missed calls from me, from Mara, and from Rosa. There were unsent drafts Dad had saved when he couldn't get service on the old device.

Danny, I need you to listen.

Please come home early one day.

I don't think I am safe here.

I read the messages in the investigator's office and wished I could reach backward through time. Dad saw my face and rested his hand over mine.

"Reading them now doesn't make you guilty of what she did," he said. "But you can learn from what you missed."

"I let her speak for you."

"Yes. And now you let me speak for myself."

He insisted on choosing his own clothes for the hearing. He chose a navy jacket Mom had bought him years before and a tie with tiny silver hammers. He asked to walk with his own walker, not be pushed in a wheelchair for anyone's convenience.

Mara watched him practicing the steps from the living room to the porch.

"Grandpa, you don't have to prove anything," she said.

"I know. I'm trying to get to the mailbox. There's a difference."

Tessa found another invoice for an imaginary elder-care consultancy registered at Judith's address. Judith admitted Nolan had paid her to use it. She had not asked where his money came from.

"I thought my children were doing business," she said. "I didn't want to know more."

I understood her too well. Not wanting to know had become the family habit.

The night before the hearing, Simone emailed me for the first time since leaving. She asked to meet alone and said she wanted to make things right.

I forwarded the message to Leah and declined a private meeting.

Simone replied six minutes later.

If your father testifies, Mara will learn what you did with the company five years ago. Ask yourself whether you want that.
