Chapter 18 - The Dead Man's Signature

Grant's father, Arthur Whitmore, had supposedly died nine years earlier aboard a private yacht. There had been a memorial, a closed casket, and an obituary praising his generosity. There had never been a public death certificate.

"Arthur designed the first Meridian accounts," Evelyn said. "When Grant began using them to steal scholarship money, Arthur threatened to testify. Then he disappeared."

"You think he's alive?" Lena asked.

"I know he was alive two years ago. He sent me a letter from a care facility in Vermont."

Adrian tracked the facility through an old payment record. Arthur was living there under the name Walter Ames, weakened by a stroke but mentally sharp. With a court-appointed advocate present, Nora and Evelyn visited him.

Arthur watched them from a wheelchair beside a window. "Evelyn Vale," he said slowly. "I wondered whether they'd ever let you out."

"Your son stole millions," Nora replied. "My father died carrying the blame."

Arthur lowered his eyes. "I made the machine. Grant learned how to use it."

"Will you testify?"

He looked at his hands. "I have hidden for nine years. Do you know what it feels like to be afraid of your own child?"

Nora thought of her mother's stolen years, of the scholarship students whose lives had been quietly robbed, of Celeste wearing armor made of emerald silk.

"Yes," Nora said. "I think we know a little about fear."

Arthur requested pen and paper. He signed a sworn statement identifying his own accounts and confirming that Grant had redirected the trust's funds. Then he named the person who had approved the false confession video: Grant's corporate counsel, Martin Keene.

"Keene is the attorney who filed the injunction," Adrian said. "If Arthur's right, it's fraud on the court."

Arthur handed Nora a second document, a sealed bank instruction bearing his original signature. "This releases the unaltered ledgers directly to the court. Nobody can say you stole them."

For the first time, Nora could imagine the end of the fight.

Then Adrian's phone lit up with a headline: GRANT WHITMORE FOUND DEAD IN ESTATE OFFICE.

Arthur closed his eyes. "No," he whispered. "My son wouldn't do that."
