Chapter 19 - The Last Performance

The headline was wrong. When Lena reached the estate, Grant was alive. The ambulance outside the office was transporting Martin Keene, the corporate attorney, who had collapsed after an argument. Someone had planted the false headline to throw investigators off course.
"Grant's buying time," Lena told Nora. "Keene had just agreed to cooperate."
The next morning, Nora entered the courthouse wearing the same dusty rose dress. She had washed the smoke from its sleeves and repaired a torn seam herself. She left the small pale patch on the chest untouched. It reminded her of every job her mother had worked to keep food on the table.
Celeste sat on the opposite side of the aisle in a simple dark green suit. When their eyes met, she did not smile. She nodded once, a quiet acknowledgment of the damage between them.
Grant arrived with two attorneys and the polished assurance of a man who believed expensive words could change facts. He smiled at the judge. He smiled at the cameras. He even smiled at Nora.
Then Arthur Whitmore was wheeled into the courtroom.
Grant's smile vanished.
"Father?" he said.
Arthur testified for nearly an hour. Judge Bell authenticated Eleanor's original trust, Helen Price authenticated the bribery messages, and Evelyn explained how her confession had been coerced. Finally, Celeste took the stand.
"I helped him hide documents," she said. "I lied to protect my reputation. I humiliated a woman who was trying to uncover the truth because I was terrified she'd succeed. I am ashamed of that."
Grant's attorney stood. "Mrs. Whitmore is bitter about her marriage."
"I am," Celeste said. "But bitterness doesn't change bank records."
Arthur's unaltered ledgers reached the judge under seal. With that evidence and the witness testimony, the court froze the Meridian transfer, removed Grant from control of the trust pending further proceedings, and referred the criminal allegations for prosecution.
Outside, reporters shouted questions. Nora felt Evelyn's hand find hers.
"We did it," her mother whispered.
"Not all of it," Nora answered. "But enough to stop him."

As officers moved to take Grant into custody on a newly issued warrant, he leaned close to Nora.
"You think Eleanor chose you because she loved your mother?" he hissed. "Ask Evelyn whose name was on your birth certificate."
