Chapter 4 - Smoke in the West Wing

The archive occupied the west wing of the estate, behind the ballroom's glamorous face. As Adrian drove up the service road, smoke curled above the stone roof. Firefighters were dragging a hose through a side entrance.
"Tell me this isn't happening again," Nora said.
Twenty-two years earlier, a fire had destroyed three rooms of Ashcroft records. Nora's father, Daniel Vale, had been blamed for a faulty heater. He'd spent the last twelve years being called careless, even criminal, until he died with that accusation following him.
Lena flashed her badge from her former department and managed to reach the fire captain. The damage was contained to a single storage room. The alarm had triggered early. No one was hurt.
"What burned?" Adrian asked.
"Newspaper boxes. Tax files. An old display cabinet," the captain replied. "But there's something you should see."
He led them to a charred doorway. Across the floor lay a dark streak of liquid that smelled unmistakably of fuel. A broken window overlooked the garden.
"Arson," Lena said.
"We're investigating," the captain corrected.
Nora stared at the blackened walls. A memory returned: her mother at the kitchen table, checking a door latch three times, whispering that the fire wasn't an accident. Nora had been nine. She'd thought her mother was frightened of ghosts.
Adrian's phone rang. He answered, listened, then stepped away.
"Who is it?" Nora asked when he returned.
"The county clerk. A motion was just filed to freeze the trust records. The filing includes a sworn statement saying your mother confessed to forging them."
Nora shook her head. "She never confessed."
"I know. But whoever submitted it attached a video."
Adrian played the short clip. Evelyn Vale appeared in a small office, older and exhausted. A man's voice asked whether she had altered the Ashcroft papers.
Evelyn glanced toward someone outside the camera's frame.
"Yes," she said.
Nora felt the pavement shift under her feet. The video ended abruptly, before her mother could say another word.
"That isn't the whole recording," Nora said.
Lena nodded toward the smoky wing. "Then we need the rest."

A firefighter emerged carrying a half-melted metal box. Inside was a surviving security tape, labeled in block letters with the date of the original archive fire.
And written underneath the date was a name: CELESTE.
