Chapter 7 - The Camera Nobody Knew About

Felix was gone by the time the patrol car reached the highway. His office desk was clean, his service weapon missing, and the mansion's main security recorder had been stripped of its hard drive.

“He knew we'd ask for the footage,” Ortiz said.

“Or somebody told him,” Maya replied.

A groundskeeper named Ben Harlow came forward while they searched the garage. He was sixty-two, with dirt beneath his nails and a habit of talking to his tools.

“I don't know about your fancy cameras,” he said. “But the raccoons kept chewing through my irrigation lines. I put up a little wildlife camera by the pergola.”

Maya turned. “Does it point at the pool?”

“Part of it. I checked yesterday and there was a woman in a red dress walking around.”

“Burgundy,” Maya said. “That was Sloane.”

Ben looked frightened by how eager they were. “I took the memory card out this morning. It's in my pump shed. Didn't want the rain getting it.”

Ortiz called for an evidence technician. “Nobody touches that shed until we get there.”

But Ben stared toward the dark end of the property. “I may have left the door unlocked.”

They crossed the terrace in a hurry. Inside the narrow shed, pumps rattled beneath the floor. Shelves held chlorine test kits, repair parts, and Ben's collection of old coffee cans. He reached behind a coil of hose and found an empty space.

“No,” he said. “It was right here.”

Maya felt the air leave her chest.

“Who else knew?” Ortiz asked.

“Nobody. Well, I told Felix I had a way to see what kept messing with the pipes.”

Ortiz exhaled sharply. “There it is.”

Then Maya noticed the dust. A wide clean stripe marked the shelf, but beneath it lay a tiny green plastic corner, snapped from a camera-card case.

“Someone grabbed it in a hurry,” she said.

A phone rang somewhere in the shed. They searched until they found it under a bucket. The screen belonged to Ben's work phone, which he had sworn was in his truck.

A video started automatically: Claire, soaking wet on the hospital bed, appeared in the frame. A man's voice said, “Tell us where the folder is, or your husband gets the same treatment.”

The picture lurched.

Then came Ethan's voice, shouting from somewhere offscreen.
