Chapter 11 - The Price of Silence

I stopped.

Claire had a bruise along her cheek. Her hands were bound. But she was alive.

Really alive.

Six years collapsed into one impossible second.

"Let her go," I said.

Luis kept the gun steady. "Wish I could."

Vanessa shoved Claire into the SUV.

"You should've stayed in New York, Ethan."

"You hurt Sophie."

Something flickered across her face.

"I scared her. I needed her quiet."

"You left bruises on an eight-year-old child."

"Because Claire kept coming back! She filled Sophie's head with stories and made her ask questions."

Claire spat, "She asked why her mother was dead. That's not a dangerous question unless you're guilty."

Vanessa slapped her.

I moved.

Luis fired into the dirt near my foot.

"Don't."

Marcus appeared on the porch behind me with Sophie hidden inside.

Vanessa saw him and panicked.

"Drive!"

Luis backed toward the SUV.

Daniel's headlights suddenly swept across the yard from the opposite road.

Owen's vehicle blocked the exit.

For three seconds, everyone froze.

Claire used them.

She slammed her shoulder into Vanessa and dropped to the ground.

I rushed Luis.

The gun fired.

Pain tore across my upper arm, but I hit him hard enough to send the weapon spinning under the SUV.

Owen tackled Luis.

Daniel pulled Claire away.

Vanessa jumped behind the wheel.

The SUV roared backward through a wooden fence and disappeared down a service track.

Marcus called 911.

I barely heard him.

Claire was standing ten feet away.

She looked older, thinner, tougher.

Still Claire.

Sophie ran from the house.

"Mom!"

Claire dropped to her knees.

Sophie crashed into her arms.

I watched them hold each other.

Then Claire looked over Sophie's shoulder at me.

"Ethan," she said, crying, "Vanessa has the ledger."

Daniel swore.

Claire's next words were worse.

When Claire finally stood in front of me, I noticed a thin scar near her temple that hadn't been there before. I wanted to ask where every scar came from, who had given it to her, why I hadn't been there. But Sophie was holding her so tightly that questions felt selfish. For once, I let reunion be more important than answers.

"And the ledger proves she owns half your company."
