Chapter 8 - The Missing Ten Seconds

Ethan watched the clip three times.

"This was edited," he said.

"Obviously."

"No. I mean deliberately. Look at the beginning."

The video started with Diane already recoiling. My arm was halfway raised. Whoever filmed it had trimmed away the moment before.

Sergeant Kelly asked me to forward the message to her.

"Do you recognize the number?"

"No."

The venue manager checked the ballroom cameras.

For twenty unbearable minutes, we waited in a side room while the reception limped back to life. Claire refused to cut the cake until Lily felt ready to stand beside her. Mateo ordered the bar to stop serving anyone who tried to turn the incident into entertainment.

Finally, the manager returned with a laptop.

"We have three camera angles. None include audio, but they show the entire interaction."

The first angle showed Marcus handing Lily the cupcake.

Lily smiled.

Diane approached immediately.

She pointed at the dessert.

Lily shook her head.

Diane grabbed the cupcake and dropped it on the floor.

Then she slapped Lily.

My vision blurred.

I had known. I had seen the aftermath. But watching my child flinch before the blow was different.

The second angle showed me returning.

Diane grabbed Lily's arm.

I knocked her hand away.

Diane shoved me.

Then I slapped her.

Clear. Unmistakable. Complete.

Sergeant Kelly made a note. "This context matters."

The third angle was farther away, facing the opposite side of the ballroom.

It showed something none of us had noticed.

A woman in a navy dress stood behind a floral display holding her phone sideways.

She filmed the confrontation.

After I slapped Diane, she stopped recording and immediately walked toward the service hall.

Jenna, the photographer, recognized her.

"That's Diane's cousin, Marjorie."

Ethan swore.

I knew Marjorie too. She appeared at holidays, praised Diane's cooking, and somehow always ended up carrying gossip from one branch of the family to another.

"Is she still here?" Kelly asked.

Claire scanned the ballroom. "No."

The manager checked exit footage.

Marjorie had left three minutes after Diane was escorted outside.

I pulled up the unknown text again.

"She sent it."

Kelly raised a hand. "Maybe. Let us verify before you contact anyone."

I wasn't going to contact Marjorie.

I was done arguing with people committed to misunderstanding what they had done.

Then another message arrived.

Same number.

You can still fix this. Apologize publicly, stop poisoning Ethan against his mother, and this video goes nowhere.

Below it was a second attachment.

A PDF.

The filename read: Petition_Draft_Whitmore_v_Mercer.pdf

Ethan opened it.

May you like

It was an unfinished legal petition asking a court for temporary grandparent visitation with Lily.

Diane had been planning to seek legal access to the child she claimed was not family.
