Chapter 6 - It Was Meant for You

“Say that again.”
Rebecca’s breathing shook through the phone.
“The bottle was for you.”
I looked at the dark window of the jet and saw my own reflection staring back.
“What did you give my son?”
“I don’t know the real name. Caleb brought it. He said it would make you sleep hard enough that you’d miss a board vote.”
My voice dropped.
“And you agreed to drug me?”
“No. Not like that.”
“You just told me you had the bottle.”
“I agreed to put something mild in your whiskey. He told me it was harmless.”
Lena’s eyes narrowed.
Rebecca rushed on.
“Then Henry found the folder. He heard us arguing. He said he was telling you. Caleb panicked.”
“So you slapped an eight-year-old and forced the drug down his throat.”
“I wanted him asleep long enough to stop him from calling you.”
The words hit harder than any excuse could have.
“You locked him in a room.”
“I was trying to keep Caleb away from him.”
“By helping Caleb pack his passport?”
“That wasn’t me.”
“Your fingerprints are probably all over that suitcase.”
“I packed clothes because Caleb said we were taking Henry to your lake house until you got home. I didn’t know about the passport.”
I laughed once, without humor.
“You expect me to believe you protected my son by drugging him?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I expect you to hate me. But if you only come after me, Caleb wins.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Then give me something useful.”
A long silence.
Finally, she said, “Ask Lena why the camera moved.”
My eyes lifted.
Lena froze.
Rebecca continued.
“The cameras don’t track faces like that. Not automatically.”
I turned slowly toward my assistant.
Lena set her tablet down.
“That’s not exactly true,” she said.
“What is she talking about?”
“The system has manual remote control.”
“I know.”
“And only three people have administrator access.”
“Me. Security. And you.”
Lena swallowed.
Rebecca whispered, “She was watching before you were.”
The call ended.
I stared at Lena.
“How long?”
Her face had gone white.
“How long were you watching my son before you showed me?”
She opened her mouth.
May you like
Then my phone buzzed with a security alert from the hospital.
Someone had just tried to enter Henry’s room using my name.
