Chapter 14 - The Report in the Furnace

The original laboratory report was supposedly kept at a private records facility attached to the Cole family's closed textile mill. Detective Price couldn't simply rush in based on a rumor, but Vivian's information helped her seek an emergency preservation order.

Evelyn waited in Price's office with cold coffee and a knot in her stomach. She wanted action. She wanted to be the kind of person who kicked down doors. Mostly she wanted her father back.

"You're allowed to be furious," Price told her. "You're not allowed to wreck the case trying to feel better for ten minutes."

At 10:42 p.m., officers entered the mill under the court order. Celeste's security chief, Owen Pierce, was standing beside an industrial furnace with a box of files. He tried to claim he was cleaning old records.

Price showed him the order. "Step away."

He ran. An officer caught him near the loading bay. The furnace was hot, but the box remained intact.

Inside were years of falsified water tests, a list of contractors, and an unaltered sample report from the week Thomas died. The measured levels in one groundwater sample greatly exceeded the limit shown on the public report. Regulators would still need independent testing, but the records explained the fraud.

Vivian was sitting beside Evelyn when the detective called. "They found it," Evelyn said.

For a brief second Vivian looked like a little girl waiting for permission to be happy.

Then her phone rang. Celeste's name appeared.

Vivian answered on speaker.

"You think that changes anything?" Celeste said. "I made the people who signed those reports, Vivian. I can make them disappear."

"Mom, stop."

Price called in a second investigator to document the files before anyone moved them. The process was slow, with photographs, numbered seals, and signatures on forms. Evelyn hated every minute of waiting. Then she remembered how easily false papers had nearly taken her company. Accuracy wasn't the enemy of urgency. It was how they would keep the truth from being stolen a second time.

"Bring me Evelyn Hart's original key. Bring it now. Or I'll tell the police what you did the night Thomas died."
