Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Daniel's younger brother, Michael, had lived overseas for years. Evelyn remembered him as a nervous, funny teenager who loved old cars and hated his family's business. She had never suspected he could be connected to Thomas's death.

Price located Michael and interviewed him with counsel present. He admitted driving a second car that night. Celeste's team had told him he was to make sure Thomas reached a private meeting, not force him off the road. When Pike accelerated, Michael saw the collision unfold.

"I called Daniel," he told Price. "I was screaming. He told me not to go near the scene."

Daniel corroborated the call. He also admitted that afterward he helped Celeste conceal records of the meeting while telling himself the crash had been an accident. His cooperation came late, and it did not erase his conduct.

The investigation could now distinguish between who had planned intimidation, who had been present, who had falsified evidence, and who had tried to cover it up. Evelyn knew justice would take longer than the dramatic wedding scene people kept replaying online.

Celeste was arrested on charges arising from the alleged conspiracy and obstruction; Vale was charged separately. Both denied wrongdoing. Pierce agreed to provide information in exchange for prosecutors considering his cooperation. Regulators pursued the environmental violations through their own process.

Evelyn watched the reports without cheering. She had wanted an impossible thing: a day when she could call her father and tell him it was over.

Vivian came to the workshop carrying the silver overskirt, cleaned and repaired. "Hotel storage found it. I thought you should decide what happens to it."

Evelyn touched the beadwork. "You could have thrown it out."

"I threw out enough of your choices already."

They stood quietly. Forgiveness had not arrived, and neither woman pretended it had.

Then a messenger handed Evelyn a sealed notice from the probate court. Someone was challenging Thomas Hart's will.

When the cameras left, Evelyn went home and sat on the stairs. The house smelled of furniture polish and the lavender soap Daniel had bought her last Christmas. She gathered his spare keys into a dish and called a locksmith. She wasn't doing it for revenge. She simply wanted one door in her life to open only when she chose. It was a small boundary, but that night it let her sleep.

The petitioner was Daniel Whitmore.
