Chapter 16 - The Camera They Forgot

Evelyn forwarded the message to Price. The detective traced it to a computer at the Sterling Hotel. Rosa immediately recognized the sender's initials: L.M., the night audiovisual technician, Lena Morris.
Lena was waiting in the hotel lobby with a backpack and a look of open terror.
"I don't want money," she said. "I want my job back. They fired me after the lights went off."
"Show us what you have," Price replied.
The ballroom's main camera system had gone dark during the blackout, but Lena's rehearsal camera continued recording on its own battery. Its view reached the stage, the railing, and a narrow service corridor.
On the video, Celeste gestured to Pierce. He entered the control room. Seconds later the chandeliers died. In the corridor, Daniel argued with Celeste.
"You said Evelyn would sign and leave quietly," Daniel shouted.
"She knows too much," Celeste replied. "Use the arrest papers."
"I'm not sending her to jail."
Celeste moved close enough for the camera to catch her mouth. "You helped bury Thomas Hart's complaint. Don't grow a conscience now."
Daniel looked at the floor. Then he said, "I never agreed to hurt her."
The recording did not absolve him. It confirmed he had been a willing participant until the damage reached someone he loved—or thought he loved.
Lena wiped her palms on her jacket. "There's another clip. From before the guests arrived."
In it, Evelyn's silver-beaded gown hung on a rack. Celeste inspected the removable shoulder fastenings and laughed.
"She thinks she's walking in as the bride," Celeste said. "Let her have her little entrance. Then give her the settlement papers."
The camera shifted, capturing a second person standing behind Celeste.

Lena described the morning of the ceremony with painful precision. Staff had been ordered to remove the Hart family name from the welcome screens just after the processional began. A young banquet server had protested and been sent home. 'They wanted a new story without changing the people in the room,' Lena said. Evelyn looked at the frozen image of herself beneath the chandeliers. 'Then let's make sure everybody sees the part they tried to cut.'
It was Marcus Bell.
