Chapter 15 - Thirty Seconds at the Gate

The courthouse had metal detectors, officers, cameras, and rules.
Clare had never felt less safe.
Richard arrived through the public entrance with his attorney and the private investigator ten steps behind him.
He saw Clare across the lobby.
He smiled.
Then he looked at Maya.
Maya hid behind Elena’s coat.
Richard’s smile vanished for half a second.
That half second told Clare everything.
He did not care that Maya was afraid.
He cared that people could see it.
An officer directed Richard to the opposite waiting area.
He complied.
Of course he complied.
Thirty minutes before the hearing, Elena received carrier records linking the wiped iPhone fourteen to a line paid through a corporate expense account at Richard’s law firm.
Ten minutes later, Richard’s firm sent a letter claiming the line had been assigned to “general litigation support.”
Five minutes after that, Elena found the activation address.
Richard’s home office.
“Enough?” Clare asked.
“Almost.”
“Why is it never enough?”
“Because courts move on evidence, not what we can feel in our bones.”
The private investigator requested to use the restroom.
On the way back, he passed within thirty feet of Clare.
He dropped an envelope.
An officer stopped him immediately.
“I dropped paper,” he said.
The envelope had Clare’s name on it.
Inside was a photograph of Maya sleeping in her New York bedroom three weeks earlier.
Taken from outside the window.
On the back, someone had written:
YOU COULD HAVE ENDED THIS ANY TIME.
The investigator denied knowing what was in it.
Police detained him for questioning.
Richard watched from across the lobby.
For the first time, he looked angry in public.
Clare walked toward him until the officer raised a hand to keep distance.
She stopped exactly where ordered.
Richard mouthed, Come home.
Clare shook her head.
“No.”
She said it aloud.
The sound carried through the lobby.
Richard’s face hardened.
The courtroom doors opened.
Before Clare entered, Elena’s phone buzzed.
She read the message twice.
“What?” Clare asked.
May you like
Elena looked up.
“The private investigator is talking.”
