Chapter 1 - The Fall

The scream came before the baby hit the floor.

"I CAUGHT HER!" Elena shouted, dropping to her knees with Lily pressed against her chest. "She tried to drop the baby!"

Mark Carter froze halfway down the grand staircase. For one impossible second, the whole house seemed to stop with him: the chandelier, the grandfather clock, the rain tapping the windows.

Mark took the last six steps in a rush. "What did you just do, Victoria?"

Victoria stood beside the upstairs railing, one hand gripping the banister. Her face had gone white. "It was an accident! Elena grabbed her from me. The maid is lying!"

"Shut your mouth right now!" Mark snapped.

Elena's arms shook. She had worked in the Carter house for three years, first as a housekeeper, then as the person Lily reached for whenever she was tired or afraid. Elena almost never raised her voice.

"She checked the security camera blind spots yesterday," Elena said. "She asked me which hallway cameras were broken. She asked David how long the maintenance would take."

Mark turned slowly toward his wife. "Is that true, Victoria?"

Victoria's fear hardened into anger. "She's setting me up to take my place! Can't you see what she's doing? She wants this house. She wants you."

Elena stared at her. "I want the baby alive."

Mark reached for Lily, but the child clung to Elena's blouse, sobbing into her shoulder. His face crumpled. "Get out of my house, Victoria. Right now."

"Mark, listen to me - "

"GET OUT!"

Footsteps thundered from the rear hall. David Shaw, the security contractor, appeared with a tablet under his arm. Behind him came Eleanor Vale, Victoria's mother, dressed in a cream coat as if she had walked into the wrong kind of party.

"You can't speak to my daughter like this," Eleanor said.

"I can when my daughter almost hit a marble floor."

"Your daughter?" Eleanor said coolly. "Victoria has raised Lily for almost a year."

Elena glanced toward Mark's office. "Mr. Carter," she said, suddenly quieter, "there's something else. Look at the papers I found hidden in your desk."

She pointed to a brown legal envelope on the entry table. Mark tore it open and scanned the first two pages. The color drained from his face. "She changed my life insurance policy," he whispered.

Victoria lunged forward. "That's private!"

David stepped between them. "There's more. The hallway camera did have a blind spot. But the ceiling smoke detector has a backup lens. Victoria didn't know that."

"It caught the entire drop on tape."

"Please, Mark," Victoria said. The anger vanished. Her voice became small. "Don't show that to the police."

Mark looked at her as if he had never seen her before.

"They're already here."

The front lights flashed blue and red.

And from inside the legal envelope, one final page slid onto the floor - bearing Mark's forged signature and a date from the night his first wife died.
