Chapter 11 - The Announcement

He stood at the front of the aisle with his mother beside him. The room fell quiet when the guests came back in. Vanessa remained near the flowers, her veil brushing the edge of a gold chair.

"Thank you for being here," Marcus said. His voice shook once, then steadied. "There won't be a wedding ceremony today. I'm sorry for the confusion and for the trouble many of you took to come. We need privacy now."

A ripple moved through the room. No accusations, no detailed explanation. That restraint cost Marcus more than shouting would have.

Vanessa looked at him with a mixture of disbelief and anger. She had imagined him announcing a delay, a sudden emergency, anything that might make the day salvageable. He hadn't given her a false story to hide inside.

One guest stepped forward as if to ask a question, saw Marcus's face, and stopped. Others began moving quietly toward the doors. Someone set a white program on a chair. Someone else turned off the music.

Evelyn tugged at her son's sleeve. "I can walk. You don't need to hold me so tight."

He loosened his arm but didn't let go. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize for caring. Just remember I'm still standing."

He smiled for the first time all afternoon, a painful little smile she recognized from boyhood.

Vanessa watched them. In the hush, she noticed something she'd never cared to see before: they weren't plotting against her. They were simply steadying each other.

Marcus escorted his mother slowly along the aisle. He didn't look back. Vanessa stood alone under the windows until the last footsteps faded.

Then she saw a small folded note beneath the chair where Evelyn had sat. She picked it up expecting another accusation. On the outside, in silver-gray ink, were the words For Vanessa.

Her hands shook as she unfolded it.
