Chapter 13 - The Numbers Don't Lie

Vanessa met Marcus in a quiet corner of the same venue after the crowd had gone. The white flowers seemed almost absurd without witnesses. Evelyn had been taken home by a family friend, and Marcus had called to make sure she arrived safely.
He set two printed account statements on the table. "I checked the charges."
Vanessa sat across from him. "I requested the vendor invoices."
"Good. We need both."
The list was worse in black and white. Eight thousand dollars had come from his emergency account. Twelve thousand had come from Evelyn's savings. Other balances sat on Vanessa's cards, collecting interest. The money didn't add up to the dream she'd sold him; it added up to a problem neither could solve with a single check.
"I thought a promotion was coming," Vanessa said. "I spent ahead of it."
"And when it didn't come?"
"I kept thinking I could fix it before you noticed."
Marcus rubbed his forehead. "You could have told me we needed to cut the guest list."
"I know."
"You could have asked me to help pay the deposit."
"I know."
"You could have said we weren't ready for this wedding."
"I know, Marcus."
He stopped. The answer she offered now was honest, but it didn't erase the months when she had refused to speak that way.
They discussed refunds. They separated charges into those he had approved and those he hadn't. Vanessa agreed to repay the unauthorized eight thousand directly to his account and make a written repayment plan for Evelyn. Marcus told her he'd keep copies of everything, not as a threat, but because trust had become something they had to measure against facts.
"Does this mean we can try again?" she asked.
"It means we're starting by telling the truth. That's all I can promise."

The word starting gave her a flash of hope. Then he placed the second sheet in front of her. At the bottom was a charge she didn't recognize.
"What's this one?" he asked. "Because it doesn't look like a wedding expense."
