Chapter 5 - The Messages

For the first time that afternoon, Marcus felt something colder than anger. He wasn't staring at a misunderstanding. He was staring at instructions for hiding one.
"May I see the messages?" he asked Evelyn.
"Only if you promise not to yell."
"I promise I'll listen."
She handed him the phone. Vanessa took a quick step toward them.
"Those are private conversations."
"Between you and my mother," he said. "About money you told me we didn't owe."
He scrolled. Vanessa's first request had been polite. The second mentioned a deadline. The third said Marcus would feel humiliated if he learned his mother had saved the day. Then came a line that made his throat close: IF YOU REALLY LOVE HIM, DON'T PUT THIS ON HIS SHOULDERS.
Evelyn watched his face. "I didn't want to choose sides."
"You should never have been asked to."
Vanessa's voice cracked. "I was desperate. The venue threatened to pull the reception. I thought if I could buy a few days, I'd fix it."
"With what money?"
"My bonus. An advance. Something."
"Something isn't a plan."
"I know."
Her admission landed without the force she expected. Marcus had never demanded that Vanessa be perfect. He had asked her to be honest, even when honesty was ugly. She had chosen appearances, and then turned his mother's kindness into leverage.
"Why the jacket?" he asked suddenly. "What did it do to you?"
Vanessa looked at the silver-green fabric around Evelyn's shoulders. "I thought she was doing it to embarrass me."
"By staying warm?"
"By wearing something I specifically asked her not to wear."
Evelyn spoke at last. "I kept it in my lap. I told you I wouldn't wear it in the pictures."
Marcus remembered his aunt June laughing in that same jacket at Christmas. Now he understood why his mother had held it like a keepsake.
"You didn't even ask why it mattered," he said to Vanessa.
May you like
Vanessa opened her lips. He waited for a reason, an apology, anything that didn't make the damage worse.
Instead she whispered, "There's another thing about the payment you don't know."
