Chapter 12 - The Father Who Tried to Confess

Ruth replayed the second recording once, then stopped it. “We cannot assume what that means. We need the entire conversation and independent evidence.”
Benjamin appreciated her discipline even as anger made his hands shake. He had mourned Richard. He had spoken at his funeral. He had told a church full of people that his friend was flawed but loyal.
“What if he was trying to warn me?” Benjamin asked.
Ruth answered gently. “Then we owe him the truth.”
The archived file had been edited. Malcolm recovered metadata pointing to an older backup at a private data center owned by one of Ethan's shell vendors. Investigators obtained emergency legal authority to preserve the backups before anybody could delete them.
At the airport hotel, officers found a housekeeper who remembered Grace. She had seen a woman in a gray hoodie slip a paper note beneath the edge of a housekeeping cart. She kept it because the handwriting looked urgent.
The note contained three lines: ROOM 1412. NO POLICE IN HALL. ASK FOR THE MUSIC.
The first two lines were straightforward. The third made no sense until Benjamin heard it.
“The music,” he whispered. “When Grace was little, Evelyn taught her a song on the piano. She used it as a code whenever she wanted to tell me something without her friends understanding.”
“What song?” Price asked.
“‘Moon River.’”
Ruth called the hotel manager. Room 1412 was booked under the name Marian Rivers. The registered guest had checked out before noon, leaving behind a locked suitcase.
The suitcase was opened under a warrant. It contained Grace's spare clothes, a prepaid phone, and a small music box shaped like a silver moon. Inside the box was a memory card.
Malcolm examined the card on an isolated computer. It held documents from the foundation, plus an encrypted audio recording. The password prompt offered a single hint: WHAT MOM ALWAYS SAID.
Benjamin knew the answer instantly. Evelyn had said it to the children before every hard school day.

“Do the right thing, even when you're scared.”
The file unlocked, and Grace's terrified voice filled the room. “If you're hearing this, Victor found me.”
