Chapter 8 - Nine Million Minutes Too Late

Malcolm slapped the laptop shut, then opened it again with trembling fingers. “The transfer's pending. I can freeze the bank session if the credentials haven't rotated.”

“Do it,” Price said.

“I need a court-authorized emergency hold.”

Ruth had one already. She slid the signed order across the security counter, and Malcolm called the bank's fraud desk. For seven minutes, every person in the lobby seemed to breathe at the same time.

Then the bank confirmed the payment was stopped.

Nine million dollars had come within one approval click of vanishing into an offshore account.

Ethan stared at his own phone. “You can't freeze operating cash. People won't get paid.”

“Employees will get paid from protected payroll funds,” Ruth said. “The judge made that clear.”

“You don't understand how this business works.”

“No, Ethan. We understand exactly how you made it work.”

Benjamin felt no victory. Just an ache beneath his ribs where grief seemed to live permanently. He remembered Ethan at twelve, begging to tour the building's roof. He remembered buying him a little plastic hard hat. A young boy had stood at the top of the tower and promised he'd build something even taller one day.

“Why?” Benjamin asked quietly.

Ethan looked away.

“You didn't need any of this. You had a salary, a position, an opportunity Richard and I would've killed for at your age. Why take more?”

For a second Ethan looked like the boy on the roof. Then contempt returned. “Because you old men built your fortunes before anyone knew how to fight. You don't know what winning costs now.”

“I know what other people pay when you cheat.”

A bank representative called Ruth. The freeze had triggered a separate compliance review. They had found a second authorized user on the offshore account.

Ruth listened without interrupting.

When she hung up, Benjamin knew it was bad.

“What?” he asked.

“The account isn't only in Ethan's control.”

“Whose name?”

Ruth hesitated. “Grace Carter.”
